But McDermott wasn't winning in Ames. And the pressure to compete with Big 12 schools like Kansas and Texas had prompted him to recruit players he didn't enjoy coaching.

Boy, that's some spin right there. How about "He was a miserable failure at Iowa State and was about to be fired anyway, and then he fell ass-backwards into another job".
