If you drop football, you are not just going to dump all that cost and turn that into money you can use for other things. You are going to lose multiple sources of revenue that without football would not be there.
Football is expensive, and only the very elite (15-20 programs if that) of FBS are making money on football. But it certainly has a great value to a number of schools.
