Because I do not think Creighton and Butler would have left the MVC in 13 for the Big East when Butler, Creighton, Wichita State, UNI, VCU, and INSU all made the tournament. Of course, if they were all in the same league it probably would have only been five bids instead of six but why leave a five bid league where there would have been four recent final fours in that group? Come on. Nobody would have left and that's just with two additions.
There is no possible scenario where the Big East is created (something that was going to happen because football) and Creighton and Butler don't join that league.
Nor where Gonzaga, St. Mary's or VCU would ever consider joining the Valley!
I don't agree. Creighton hates the increased travel cost. Lets say for very realistic purposes that the MVC added Butler and Valpo years and years ago and broke off into divisions. Why would Creighton leave a four bid league that produced three final fours between WSU and Butler in recent years with plenty of other Sweet 16's in the conference with even more reduced travel costs then what they had at 10 members to fly across the country to play effing St. John's and POS DePaul? No way they leave that situation in the MVC. if they don't leave I doubt Butler leaves. If Creighton goes I agree Butler would have gone. You forget without Creighton and Butler in the Big East the Big East wouldn't have had that many more bids than the MVC over the same time frame. It would have been a lateral move at the time with increased costs. Financially it wouldn't have made sense because the exposure, bids, and final fours were already in the MVC. They would of had revenue from a great TV contract, as well as sponsrship increases
