Gregg Marshall actually made a bit more than I was reporting.

It's a great day to be a Shocker!

Looks to me like he is overpaid for the results he produces.

And what's an appropriate salary for a guy that has improved his team every year he's coached it, won an NIT championship, won the regular season championship, and gotten his team an at-large NCAA bid while being ranked for a good chunk of the year?

The results he's produced are fine. They're vastly better than a lot of coaches that are paid better him. They could certainly be better (NCAA tournament wins, MVC tournament win), but for now his results make him the best coach in the Valley (McDermott's results were arguably a bit better, but entirely dependent on his son being amazing ... coaching someone for 20 years is a bit of an anomaly, though).

The only way the MVC can grow is to keep solid coaches that create solid teams, and to do that they have to change the perception from being a stepping stone on the way to "real" coaching opportunities. To do that, you need to pay coaches that produce enough that leaping over to the first BCS job that opens is unattractive.

It's a funny thing, if you pay above market value you tend to keep your coach and when he does leave you have quality coaches lining up.

Now if you cheap azz it, then the second the coach has an option to leave he takes it. Martin couldn't get a gig soon enough it appeared.

His paycheck only indirectly relates to what he has done at Wichita State. It is more directly related to his market value on the national stage. And I can assure you, his market value is higher than 1.482 million as he has already turned down contracts from at least two schools for 2 million. HCGM is a proven winner and no doubt could win at any school he coaches at. We are thankful and happy we hired him 5 years ago and plan on making him a very rich man as long as he stays in Wichita.

1.4 mil for 1 NCAA tourney appearance in 5 years? Probably not a great return on investment but the team is improving every year. If he gets WSU to the tourney next year, it will be money well spent but that's a big IF.

Being a Wichita State fan, I love my coach, what he's done for our university, how he pisses off fans from opposing teams and i personally dont think he's being overpaid. . . . but i dont really see why this needed to be a thread (i take it from the link to a previous thread its to prove a point but i havent taken the time to read it). Its great we can pay our coach and keep him here and keep him from being lured to other coaching jobs but i think s*** like this makes WSU fans seem total Dbags sometimes. With that I still love all of the shocker faithful and cant wait til next MVC season!

Nebraska isn't a Division I program so that doesn't count, who are the other two?
