NCAA attendance figures for 2012

Impressive to see Creighton at #6 overall and the highest increase in the nation. The Valley is 8th overall and not far from 6th as a conference.

Illinois State was at 4783 but that should improve this year with a better schedule and higher expectations.

That's pretty crazy, if you look at the top 10 list, Creighton is the only "mid-major."

Rank School G Attendance Average
1. Kentucky 18 426,978 23,721
2. Syracuse 19 448,736 23,618
3. Louisville 20 430,052 21,503
4. North Carolina 18 362,867 20,159
5. Wisconsin 18 309,255 17,181
6. Creighton 16 266,632 16,665
7. Tennessee 19 314,321 16,543
8. Ohio St. 20 330,210 16,511
9. Indiana 19 312,770 16,462
10. Kansas 17 279,557 16,445

I don't know much about how those schools handle football season tix or how big basketball is at some of them, but I wonder how many of those are because they get higher priority for football seats if they have basketball seats. I guess I'm just surprised to see Wisconsin, Tennessee and Ohio St. in the top 10.

I know that a good number of Nebraska's season tickets for basketball are related to football season tickets. I imagine it would be the same at some of these other BCS schools as well.

I think it is sad that we only have 4 teams in the top 100 (although serious credit to Indiana St for making it there - sort of eliminates the "you have to be located in a big metro area" or "you need a really good season to have good attendance" excuse we hear all too frequently.)

What this data tells us is that six MVC schools average less than 5,237 people per game.

FWIW, two teams discussed as potential MVC adds in another thread, Denver and New Mexico St, come in at 95 and 94 respectively. If they were in the MVC last season, they would have been fourth and fifth in attendance.

Those are just rockstar numbers by the Jays, no matter how they do it.

This isn't meant as a slam on CU (maybe on NU) but it's kind of funny to me that not only are there more diehard NU football fans that attend CU games than diehard CU basketball fans, but there may be more diehard NU basketball fans too.

Regardless, those numbers are staggering for any program, and a testament to the strength of the program and the marketing department. Well done!

Your statement rings of some truth, but not entirely true. There are people that are both diehard Husker football fans and diehard Creighton basketball fans. Jayskers as many call them. They shouldn't be excluded from the Creighton fold. Instead, they would count as Creighton basketball fans.

As far as Husker basketball fans that attend Creighton games, my guess is that number is quite small. Most Husker basketball fans I know, will not attend a Creighton basketball game, if for nothing else, out of sheer resentment. And the Jaysker phenomena does not travel very far outsiders of Omaha, as much of Nebraska is firmly aligned with Nebraska.rooted

What has impressed me with the growth of Creighton basketball is the fact that the university has been able to brand it so successfully that the fandom is now becoming deeply rooted. It began as diehard Creighton alums, with casual followers, as the program improved, curiosity and success increased the casual fanbase. The move to the Qwest, now CLink brought more attention. The Joan of Arc nights got kids excited, as did the games on Channel 3.

Fast forward to today and you have multi generations that have now followed Creighton basketball. You no longer have the honeymoon factor of a hot team in a shiny new arena, but a solid, dedicated fanbase that would go to games even if they were back at the Civic.

As for Husker fans, they deeply, deeply and painfully resent all of this.
There are three rules that I live by, never get less than 12 hours sleep, never gamble with a guy who has the same first name as a city and never get involved with a chick with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Stick to that and everything else is gravy!

The University of BJ's doesn't have 16,000 fans every game, the Quiet Center has 16,000 fans every game. If the BJ's had ANY competition for entertainment, they would be in trouble. The Nebraskans are starved for entertainment and come out in droves any time the lights are on in the Missing Link. They sell out anything and everything; women's swimming, rodeos, truck pulls, volleyball. The Missing Quiet Center was top 10 in the world if my memory serves in paid attendance. The Annual cow run through downtown Omaha wasn't doing it for the citizens anymore. Once they built one of the seven wonders of Nebraska, it has been full darn near every time it's open.

The Quiet Link has set several records in various events. I believe they hold the attendance record for NCAA women's volleyball... lol. Of course we know who was on the court the night they set their facility's own attendance record. That's right.. the Shocks! The BEST show in town!
