One PG is a 30-year old guy who plays profesional international ball (Russia). Another PG is the PG for Maryland. Maryland's coach (Mark Turgeon) is one of the assistant coaches picking the team. Trimble, Maryland's PG, is taller and more athletic than Fred and he hits 41% from 3. He's TO prone. Compared to Fred, he's a TO machine.
5 guys playing international; ball professionally are on the team. They may have been locks before the camp started. In that case, there would have only been 7 roster spots available for college players.
Another thought goes that a lot guys on the team can play 2 positions (like Baker). Fred only plays PG, which could be a limiting factor for selecting a 12-member team.
Good thing they picked these guys over Fred lol what an embarrassment

Great honor to cheer for a team with two superb players on it! That said, as a homer, I feel they're a little low.

Wish I could post links, but all this is from subscription sites.
ESPN Insider has VanVleet as the #4 player in the nation this year.
4. Fred VanVleet, Wichita State Shockers
Just how good was VanVleet's sophomore season in 2013-14? His numbers were "down" last season as a junior, yet he still clocks in here at No. 4. VanVleet's performance as a junior actually improved as the season progressed and the competition grew tougher. That trajectory suggests big things to come as a senior, and meanwhile the 6-foot point guard's defense has remained consistently outstanding. VanVleet has a shot at being named a consensus first-team All-American for a second consecutive preseason.

NCAA Insider has Baker as #6 in the nation
6. Ron Baker, Wichita State Shockers
In stark contrast to fellow college backcourt stars like Virginia's Malcolm Brogdon and Maryland's Melo Trimble, Baker got regular minutes (and indeed starts) for a veteran USA team during last month's Pan American games. And Baker more than justified USA coach Mark Few's confidence, hitting 35 percent of his 3s and providing a lift on defense with seven steals in just 236 fast-paced defensive possessions. With both Baker and VanVleet still on campus, Wichita State will be shooting for its third straight Missouri Valley title (and fourth in five seasons).

Yeah, WSU will be "shooting for" another MVC regular season championship./

The Sporting News Pre-Season AA list is out. FVV places on the second team and Baker on the first.

Any mention of Thurman or Marshall?

DoubleJayAlum wrote:So far, Van Vleet is averaging a foul every 2.5 minutes he is on the court and those were incurred against a D2 team. That would keep him off the floor for MVC schools that value avoiding fouls (Creighton, UNI, etc.). It isn't WSU's depth that will keep him off the floor; his propensity to foul often is what will keep him off the floor. No doubt, though, that he is the chosen one.
So far, I'm pretty pleased with what I've seen from Creighton's new freshman, and Deontae "Teddy" Hawkins' best friend,
Andre Yates.
Meanwhile, Andre Yates is gearing up for another exciting season at his transfer destination, Cleveland State. Andre hopes to improve on last year's meager 4:5 A:TO ratio and 6.1 ppg scoring average.
NAILED that one.

This was from November 7, 2012.
CBB_Fan wrote:It is too bad Evan Wessel didn't redshirt last year. Wichita State would have its backcourt set for the next 4 years, and they'd be scary by the time they were seniors.
Only reason it didn't work out exactly that way was that there was no way to keep Cotton off the court.
Wessel is thought to be preparing for playing on the perimeter for his Sr. year. Yeah, scary backcourt.

Wessel may be the most under-recognized, winningest player in MVC history.
