Notable Notes

A couple of tidbits that crossed my path:

With the Shockers ranked #23 this wek, it's the first time that all three D-1 schools in Kansas have been ranked in the Top 25 since the 1964-65 season, the Final Four Season for WSU. I suppose if K-State would have been ranked more often last year, the mark wouldn't be so notable this year.

This season commemorates the 50th anniversary of WSU's victory over #2 Ohio State 40 years ago, The #16 Shockers, led by sophomore All-American Dave Stallworth's 22 points, jumped out to a 19-9 lead over the Buckeyes in front of the largest crowd ever at Henry Levitt Arena. Obviously, the fire marshall was a Shocker fan.

Feb. 16 marks the 50th anniversary of #9 WSU's 65-64 victory over #1 Cincinnati. Stallworth scored 7 straight points in the final 3 minutes to defeat the Bearcats for the 2nd straight season, breaking their 37-game winning streak. Stallworth scored 46 points, a school record which stood until Antoine Carr scored 47 against SIU in 1983. Cincinnati was coming off a repeat national championship run as a member of the MVC.

You sure its not the 50th anniversary? Stallworth played in the 1960's.

Do you keep track of anniversaries of NCAA violations too?

In the 100+ years that WSU has been playing basketball, here is the entire list of penalties:

1. A HS in CA included a PE class in a student's (Ozell Jones) GPA. They didn't include PE classes in the GPA's of non-athletes. That got us a two-year post-season ban at a time we were #1 or 2 in the nation.
2. A recruit from CA arrived in January without a coat. He borrowed one and was still wearing it when he got back on the plane to return to CA. That was included in the previously mentioned two-year post-season ban.
3. A practice went 20 minutes over the limit. That got 2 weeks of reduced practice time.

It took an investigation that lasted nearly 2 years to find the first 2. It took a 6-week investigation to find the third. I don't think you'll find a single school in the nation who had any degree of success in the highest level of college ball in the '60's through the '80's with that few violations if they were put to the same scrutiny WSU had.

When the NCAA was headquartered in Kansas City, the majority of their employees were KU graduates - the school 20 miles down the road (with a law school). Any time WSU had a team that could beat KU or WSU got a recruit KU wanted, WSU got a never-ending NCAA investigation.

It was the football program at WSU that got the penalties that resulted in WSU at one time being the most-penalized school in NCAA history.

Just to make sure you don't forget, make sure to include the ineligible student on the cheerleading squad a few years ago. I'm surprised you haven't mentioned the recruiting irregularities in our bowling program. Oh, and one of the members of our chess club had responses to moves plugged into his iPod.

Is this the same "scrutiny" that HCGGGM references annually while in St. Louis?

I remember those days. When I attended marque games in the early 60s, fans literally sat on the steps all the way from the bottom of the steps to the top of the steps. When a fan went to the concession stand or restroom, he had to slowly, tip-toe through step sitting fans.

In about 1965 or 1966, the fire marshall did not permit fans to sit on the steps.

Why does everything have to be a conspiracy for WSU fans??

It's tiring...

Why does a perfectly innocent, unprovoking thread about WSU have to be trolled by BJ fans in the first place? For all the flack Coldblooded catches for his remarks, DoubleJayAlum is right up there on the troll chart.

It gets tiring.

Doesn't Wichita have message board? This topic should probably be talked about there, not here.

Very true. Only 9 schools are allowed to talk about their basketball teams here. If it bothers you that much, maybe you should avoiding coming in the thread and not posting in it.
