Notable Anniversary Date

Postby DoubleJayAlum » January 11th, 2013, 7:36 am

Now that ISASO wants to track anniversaries of important events in MVC history, I wanted to let everybody know that today is one of those special anniversaries. Thirty-one years ago today, January 11, 1982, the NCAA issued the report on their investigation of cheating at Wichita State University, which resulted in two years of probation, the loss of scholarships and a postseason ban.

In a lengthy, detailed report, the NCAA outlined a series of violations that would even make any SEC school look twice. WSU accepted all of the findings and did not appeal. A brief summary of some of the violations (I’ve grouped them by category):

IMPROPER TRANSPORTATION FOR BASKETBALL TEAM MEMBERS:
1) Asst coach provided a paid, one-way airline ticket to a basketball player on 3 separate occasions (June 1977, December 1977, March 1978)
2) Asst coach provided prepaid, roundtrip airline tickets to FOUR different basketball players;

TRANSPORTATION FOR PROSPECTIVE ATHLETES (recruits):
3) On two occasions, an asst coach gave recruits prepaid airline tickets from their homes to Wichita so that they could enroll for the fall semester;
4) In July 1977, an asst coach gave a recruit a prepaid airline ticket so that he could come to Wichita for a summer job lined up by the school and to enroll at the university;

IMPROPER RECRUITING INDUCEMENTS:
5) Asst coach offered to arrange for a prospective student’s mother to receive round-trip airline transportation at no cost to her so that she could attend some home basketball games;
6) For one recruit in particular, an asst coach offered all of the following:
a) air transportation for the student or the students father to come to WSU;
b) round-trip air transportation for the student to return home during breaks;
c) Cash to “take care of all of the athlete’s needs” while at WSU
7) Asst coach offered another recruit free tickets for the recruit to travel to WSU to enroll in classes and roundtrip tickets for his mother to attend a game at WSU;
8) Asst coach offered to pay a recruit’s unpaid debt that the kid incurred at a prep school;
9) Asst coach gave CASH to at least 3 separate recruits on their visits to WSU;
10) Asst coach gave a recruit a MONEY ORDER (How dumb can you be?);
11) Asst coach mailed cash to a recruit so that he could buy a suit.

The actual report contains several more violations, but I thought this was a good start. They say that if you aren’t cheating, you aren’t trying. Well baby, WSU was trying!

Make sure you remember this very special day in MVC history!

DJA, while pretty funny in context, I hope we can refrain from troll threads as you, me, and hundreds of others i'm guessing that read this board want isaso to turn the corner.

I hope this wasn't too "highboard" for you. :roll:

That Kevin Ross line about crayons and a potato was way funnier.

I'm sure Ross would think it was funny...if he could read.

So someone from Creighton posts an inappropriate thread, Creighton fans admonish him, WSU fans bring up the same drivel?

You WSU fans feel maligned on this site. Wonder why? Where are the admonishments from your side?

Again, can we talk basketball?

Completely agree. I mean i get it's a discussion board and you can talk about anything, but it's conference play right now and we should be talking about the games/players and conference realignment because that can/will be a topic that will be involving the MVC. Topics like this and a few others should be for the off season when we have nothing else to talk/b***h about.
