Evansville Aces under the radar

MVC fans are going to be surprised how much Evansville has improved in the off season. Team rankings early predictions give the Aces a lot more credit than people on here that have watched the Aces in the past with less size, speed, and depth. With two freshman point guards we struggled last year, but they have put on size. We added a Villanova transfer, judo guard to have a four guard rotation, and return two first team players. Remember two years ago we beat Wichita State twice with a team with a lot less talent than this one. Get the UE tickets now, because they will be able to contend. On this site and UE fan forever and never posted trash talk. Just trying to inform the great fans of the valley we have something going in Evansville. Return all starters next year, plus top 8 players.

Evansville looks better and they have one of the best bigs in the conference. Their opponents haven't been very strong though, and they are not good away from home. They will finish towards the top of the pack.

Evansville has improved in the off season

Not surprising. I think posters here expected that. The lack of respect for UE's program is not because we don't think the team has improved. Simmons is where improvement needed to happen, and posters here are skeptical until Marty shows something other than 4 guys setting screens for Balentine.

We added a ...judo guard

Sometimes typos are much more interesting than the correct word would have been.

I think Evansville definitely has the the talent to finish in the top 2 or 3. But to me it depends on coaching. In a lot of the Evansville games I've seen I just haven't been impressed with his (Marty) in game coaching ability. But coaches can grow and learn from their mistakes just like players. Hopefully that's the case.

Aces are 3-1 on the road so far this year, and the loss was by 2 points. 6 of next 7 games are at home. The one road game is at Belmont. Belmont RPI is generally around low 90"s, and the Aces are in the very low 100"s. If the Aces can beat Belmont, then I think they are going to be a load home or away. If they lose, then they will probably still have some problems with road games in the Valley. Either way the Aces should be the 3rd, or 4th , best Valley team this year, assuming evrybody stays healthy. The New Years Day game, to open up Valley play with UNI, will tell a lot about whether the Aces will be a real threat this year.

Like most people, I do see a nice improvement for the ACES so far.

But I like to play devil's advocate with stats. One thing that pops out right away is your 208th ranked schedule so far.

While I think it's fantastic you guys are showing life and trending in a positive direction, it just should be noted that it's not exactly the same as going up against a top 50 schedule and maintaining those stats. I think those stats will fall as you play better teams.

Either way, I can certainly appreciate the excitement and optimism that ACES fans are feeling. There are some nice pieces in place and it will be interesting to see if they can separate from the 3-6 pack in the valley that could all finish 9-9ish.

Nope. The Aces are 1-0 on the road. They beat 2-5 Miami (OH), They are 2-1 at neutral sites.

It is too early to tell if the Aces will finish in the top 4, but I would put them #3 in power rankings right now. Winning 6 or 7 of the next 7 is what Evansville needs to do, and they certainly can, but I don't think that is what will be telling regarding where they finish this year. The schedule is too soft to predict the UE finish based on wins alone. They might be the best team in the conference, or finish 7th, but no props unless beat UNI in the opener.

Easy on Coach Simmons coaching ability. Evansville has struggled to recruit with no campus life, turnover of assistant coaches leaving for more pay, and tougher academic entrance than other Valley schools. The foreign influence has evened the playing field more and we can now match up with size, speed, and shooters. Let's see how he coaches with his first deep and talented roster.
