Even UNI fans are going to disagree with some of this, but if I have to play a game these are the guys I want.

You putting Ali at PG just to get him on there?

Yup. I literally think he'd be the 13th scholly on the roster.

I love Ali, but I honestly would rather put Sonnen over Ali. Better defensively and a significantly better shooter.

Johnny may be a toss up with Ali. Considerably better on defense, pretty close on shooting (though Ali was better). As a third PG we need to pick if we want a shooter or a defensive hound. If we want a shooter I want 6'3 Marc Sonnen. If we are going defense I want 6'1 Johnny Moran

What do we know? We are just a couple of Shocker fans and this will probably have to be settled by a Saluki. It was a long time ago but I think that Joe C. Merriweather did play in the MVC but Clyde the Glide Frazier was at SIU in the 60's under Jack Harman and he never played in the MVC.

Oh, all-time best starting five that only played in MVC--I get it now. Well I could pick quite a few that would match up well with certain "great" players in the league now just by drawing names out of a hat: I"ll do that: Steve Middleton from the 12-16 Rich Herrin team is better than any wing guard player in the league now: in 1987 he averaged 25.4 points/ 6 rebounds and 2 steals over all and an even more incredible 28.1 ppg IN LEAGUE PLAY. (by the way the shocks beat the 12-16 Dawgs 89-87 and 83-81 that season) How about Wayne Abram a 6-6 PG, how about 6-8 250 pound Ashraff Amaya, how about 6-8 small forward Marcus Timmons who was a 4 year starter and all-defensive team mainstay--

The original line up stated that Merriweather was one of the best centers to ever play in the MVC. I stated that I didn't think he ever played in the MVC. A quick google search pointed out that Merriweather played through 1975. SIU joined the MVC in 1975. Nothing wrong with pre-MVC players.

For the UE Purple Aces I will go with the following players with only MVC experience:

Head Coach - Jim Crews
Asst Coach - Marty Simmons

PG - Marcus WIlson
Wing - Colt Ryan
Wing - DJ Balantine
Forward - Andy Elkins
Center - Egidijus MOckevicius

-----

If we go to only D1 years I would expand the team to be a 14 man scholarship list of:

PG - Marcus Wilson
Wing - Colt Ryan
Wing - Brad Leaf
Forward - Marty Simmons
Center - Dan Godfread

Bench
Guards - Scott Haffner, DJ Balantine, Jason Holsinger, Scott Schreffler
Forwards - Theren Bullock, RIchie Johnson, Parrish Casebier, Shy Ely
Center - Egidijus Mockevicius

Walk Ons:
Guard - Troy Taylor (loved the hustle that guy gave)
Forward - Reed Jackson (same as Troy on the hustle)

Wow! Aces starting lineup not containing Jerry Sloan (NBA all-star and Hall of Fame coach), Don Buse (ABA and NBA starter), Scott Haffner (NBA player), or Larry Humes? No Arad McCutchan (NCAA Hall of Fame coach) as Head Coach?

Give me:
PG - Don Buse
SG - Scott Haffner
F - Jerry Sloan
F - Larry Humes
C - Edidijus Mockevicius

Bench
G - DJ Balentine
G - Marcus Wilson
G - Colt Ryan
F - Theron Bullock
F - Marty Simmons
F - Sammy Watkins
C - Sascha Hupmann
C - Dan Godfried

Head Coach - Arad McCutchan
Asst Coach - Jim Crews

@ Bball Junkie - note the Aces lineups I posted were limited to MVC and D1.

Sloan, Buse and Humes - all pre D1

Arad only coached at D2

@ UEAces80

I know those guys were not D1, but they are likely the best Aces players and coach of all time, regardless of College Division or D1 status of the program.
