You are right Murray hasn't had the sweet 16's that SIU has. We have had numerous teams sweet 16 worthy though. There is no argument that it is tougher to get to a sweet 16 in the PVC though. Terrible seeding every tourney. That in my opinion just makes Murray's tourney wins more impressive. We have on two occasions missed the sweet 16 by 1 bucket. And both those times the winner played in the national title game.

Also is 2012 Murray was listed by ESPN #30 of the best college basketball programs. Where was SIU on that list? Did I miss them?

dawgbit has already admitted that he has personal reasons to be against Murray State, so I'm not sure why Murray fans are still feeding him/her. It's laughable that anyone is claiming superiority when the series record is 18-16 (or 17-17, whatever).

I agree that Murray has done about as much as it can in the OVC over the years and would be a good fit for the MVC. I don't see them falling to the bottom and should contend for the title every once in a while. Isn't that all you ask of a new league member? Same for Valpo. Those two should be slam dunks.

Murray and valpo will get in no sweat--don't feed the trolls that have wandered in off our Salukination site. Both teams will be competitive from the start--welcome brothers!

Loyola did bring MVC teams the opportunity to tell Chicago-based recruits that their families will be able to see them play at least once a year without leaving town.

Is this based on anything real, or just a guess? I'd be interested in knowing if there was any data that actually backed this up.

I'm not convinced 247Sport's class rankings are a great way to measure such a thing, but if you average MVC team class rankings on their site from 2014-17 and compare those to 2010-13, the average MVC recruit ranking has fallen by .72 since adding "the Chicago recruiting market" to the league. The clear statistical anomaly there is that the average recruit ranking for Loyola itself rose 4.78. At least from the data on 247, the MVC did not benefit in recruiting from adding Chicago, but Loyola did benefit from joining the Valley -- although Drake's recruiting is clearly better as well.

(And noting that I didn't include Wichita for obvious reasons.)

Same would go if you look at 247Sport's class rankings instead of average player ranking: Loyola and Drake have gained, and no one else. Even with those two, the average class ranking fell between 3.83 and 4.84 spots.

If there's another set of data points that indicates a benefit to market for recruiting, I'd be interested in seeing it, but this seems to be one of those "well logically it should be ..." or "a coach said ..." points that can't be backed up by anything quantifiable.

I think recruiting market is overblown just as TV markets. It all boils down to the fact that people want to win. Recruits will come if the team/conference is a winner. TV viewership will come for the same reason . so quit buying into all of this market recruiting BS and just put a winning product on the floor.

But compared to what Coach Hinson has done at SIU I'm sure that isn't all that impressive.

However, would you care to comment on the following articles?

Wow, you have really done your homework! SIU is aa low as they have ever been, I have already said that, albeit we have still defeated Murray the last two seasons. Please tell me when Murray has EVER attained the level of success of SIU. Very simple question. I promise not to open another beer until you respond.

Looks like a rivalry to me, and Murray isn't even in the conference.

:+1: DawgBit keeps inadvertently providing the best case for Murray to join.

Joah Tucker? He went to the same high school as my counsins in Milwaukee. Went to Bradley and transferred back home to UWM when we fired Molinari, and became Horizon POY and led UWM to the Sweet 16. Bradley fans tend to forget about him because he was overshadowed by the loss of future NBA all star Danny Granger, which was a complete mess. My what could have been. Tucker will make his return to Peoria in July for the TBT Midwest regional, leading the UWM alums.

I do think having schools in Chicago and Milwaukee help, if for no other reason than it's a selling point to recruits from those cities that they know they'll get a game every year in front of friends and family. That doesn't mean we should pick up UMKC or Detroit for that reason but all else being equal you grab every recruiting advantage you can.
