Take away after 10 weeks

Postby jsaluki080 » January 14th, 2024, 6:27 am

I haven't watched hardly any games. I just see all the results, read some articles, and constantly browsing MVCFANS. So, after 10 weeks. Here is what I gather. (Please let me know how far off I am)

ISUb and Drake = head and shoulders above the rest.

BU = the X factor. (Win big or go home!! They do both well)

MSU = Talented but, ONCE AGAIN, coaching problem

UNI = ..... I still don't know after 10 weeks

Murray = on the upswing.

SIU = needs an option B. An option other than prof X.

Belmont = Good, but not ISUb/Drake good

ISUr = They have their moments

Evansville = Evansville v23 (a slight upgrade from v22)

UIC = See MSU, but with less talent

Valpo = hoping people forget they have a team this year

Not sure how you can make that claim about Belmont. They boatraced Drake a week ago.

Records don't fully reflect it yet, but I'm seeing 4 tiers.

(1-2): ISU, Drake
(3-8): SIU, Bradley, Belmont, Murray, UNI, MSU
(9-11): Evansville, ISU, UIC
(12): Valparaiso

Agree, Belmont destroyed Drake. But Drake beat up on Indiana St and Ind St destroyed Belmont. Hmmm!

This looks like a good spot for a Valpo progress report and despite their win at Redbird Arena they still look likely to reach no more than 4 MVC victories- if that. There are far too many holes in this KenPom rated 7th youngest team in the country.

Coach Powell recruited 6 freshmen to this team and his 2 best inside play prospects will likely be redshirted without ever seeing the floor. The remaining 4 freshmen played 105 minutes at Illinois St scoring 31 of our 59 points and grabbing 20 of our 37 team rebounds.

We have 2 Matt Lottich senior holdovers (Palm and Barrett) who played 1 minute at ISU and will almost certainly not be offered 5th year scholarships. I'm pretty certain Roger Powell has the connections to add a couple impact transfers for 24-25 and if everything is added together VU might jump next year from a no center weak outside shooting team to a very strong MVC competitor. Meanwhile we apologize again for stinking up the Valley for the 23-24 season.

I don't think his connections play much of a part in getting good transfers.
