It was impressive Drake poached the SoCon back then after a full decade in the cellar. The Medved/Furman equivalent this time would be Bucky McMillan/Samford. But he might not be swayed by the midwest as he has spent his whole life in Birmingham: played at BSC when they were D-I, was a Birmingham-area HS coaching legend, and now Samford.

DeVries was an assistant coach who certainly worked out.

There's no guarantees.

I think they'll have a lot of qualified applicants.

The guys doing the hiring are pretty sharp.

I just hope they do it as quickly as possible, as the new coach will likely have at least 10 scholarships to fill.

Absolutely there are no guarantees. Hiring a D2 guy is no bigger a gamble than anyone else.

Didn’t Niko Medved come from Furman?

Yes

Reading his bio, I didn’t realize Marty Richter was an assistant at FGCU during the Dunk City Sweet 16. He went 56-10 in 2 years as a JuCo HC, going 30-3 the last year with a #2 ranking.

What's really remarkable about his juco record is that he literally started that team from scratch. The school didn't have a basketball team when he was first hired.

Odd fit, but I'm not sure many people really fit in West Virginia.

I am probably more surprised that Tucker wants to play on a team that will certainly not make the NCAA tournament next year in a Big 12 that is loaded.

They're going to get 10 or 11 bids. There's no reason West Virginia can't make the tournament next year.

I don’t think people comprehend how much NIL $$ WVU has. They can and will go buy some dudes. They’ll be competing for middle of the conference at minimum.

Todd Thomas must be taking this news hard. He’ll no longer get to talk about how Darian DeVries was named one of the 10 sexiest mid-major coaches in the country at Ballpark Village.
