Bears get Colorado State Grad Transfer

Postby BEARZ77 » April 15th, 2019, 10:49 am

Kinda of confirming some academic question marks with a couple incoming commits, the Bears moved to secure an experienced guard in grad transfer Anthony Masington-Bonner from Colorado State. Bear's had recruited Bonner out of HS in Lawrence Kansas before he went with CSU a few years back, and he played for MSU assistant coach Jace Herl when Herl was at CSU. Averaged 11 ppg this past season with excellent shooting stats, 51% fg, 41% 3pt, and 86% from the foul line. The 6'2 guard will be immediately eligible and have one season to play with the Bears.

Wonder if this kid may come off the bench. What's your best guess at a starting 5, and how many guys deep do you think they'll go?

At this point. who knows? Id go with this:

Gaige Prim (Juco center)
Tulio DaSilva
Josh Hall (Nevada Transfer)
Tyrike Dixon (Middle Tenn State transfer)
Lamont West (West Virginia transfer)

Bench:
Anthony Masinton-Bonner
Keandre Cook
Jared Ridder
Kabir Muhammad
Isiaih Mosely
Tyem Freeman
Dujaun Harris

I'd actually lean toward Bonner starting over Hall, but obviously there's no way of knowing at this point. I have to imagine Coach Ford doesn't even know who his starting five are now. He's going to have to wait and see who looks the best in practice and what chemistry exists between what players. And really, I think the only anointed starters at this point are Dixon and Da Silva, with Prim as a near lock to start at the five just because he'll be the only true five on the roster.

I agree, but don't think he'll be at MSN long it he's successful. Just my take.

With a "True Shooting %" of 65.5% for last year, Bonner would have ranked 2nd in the Valley [Ellingson #1] and is the top returning shooter in the Valley for 2019-20. Ford really wanted to play more uptempo and shoot the trey last year but had to adjust to a thin roster; this kid helps him move more towards that style of play this coming season.

IMO Scott is a true five. But I don't think he's ready to start this coming year even if he did give us some valuable minutes last year as a red shirt freshman.

You're right, I stand corrected. Prim is the only true five on the roster who we can count on to be a starter at this point.

Man, that's a salty roster, with the big questions being how deep will Ford go (a nine-man rotation of the five starters listed above, plus Masinton-Bonner, Cook, Mosley and Ridder would be pretty sweet) and how he'll be able to handle egos/chemistry with limited shots and playing time to go around.
One other question: who will be the primary ball-handler/backup PG when Dixon is out?
