WSU is more inclined to play Ugly Ball on the defensive end, and not on the offensive end.
Wait so shooting 35% from the field and 15% from 3 doesn't constitute Ugly Ball?
Now I am more inclined to believe this is more of an aberration than a trend for WSU when it comes to style of play, but those stats tell me it was Ugly Ball.
Just missing isn't enough to constitute Ugly Ball. Ugly Ball is all about slowing the game down, playing physical and making your opponent regret not taking conditioning drills seriously. The Shockers didn't try to slow the game down. They didn't dribble the ball up and then do nothing for 20 seconds while the clock ticked down.
They just couldn't buy a bucket. Considering the same team put up 100 points in exhibition on good shooting numbers, I think it was just quality defense, nerves, and a bad game. We'll see against the remaining weaker teams on our schedule whether our offense can come back.
