It’s a three team race in the Missouri Valley Conference – Creighton, Indiana State, Wichita State

After some unexpected results over the past week or so, it appears to be a three team race to the finish to crown the Missouri Valley Conference mens basketball regular season champion.  After 12 conference games, Creighton (9-3) leads Wichita State and Indiana State (8-4) by one game.

Here is a look at each team’s remaining schedule:

If a team is at a scheduling disadvantage, it is probably Wichita State since they still have to play both Creighton and Indiana State on the road along with a trip to Normal to face an improving Illinois State squad.

Creighton and Indiana State share four remaining opponents – Southern Illinois and Wichita State at home; Bradley and Evansville on the road. Which means the only difference in the schedule is that Creighton plays Illinois State in Omaha and the Sycamores get Drake in Terre Haute; Creighton goes to UNI while Indiana State plays at Missouri State. Creighton’s games with Illinois State and UNI probably make their schedule slightly more challenging.

What will be interesting is the unknown impact of Bracket Busters.  On February 23, Creighton has to make a west coast trip to play St. Mary’s in Moraga, CA whereas Indiana State will play at home against Iona.  Could this tilt the advantage toward Indiana State heading into the last week of conference play?  We’re about to find out as it certainly appears that the month of February will be a very entertaining one in the Valley.
